Christopher Maloney's journey on the X Factor came to an end on the first part of the show's grand finale tonight.

Having made it through to the final of the competition, despite backlash from the media and viewers of the show, Christopher joined Jahmene Douglas and James Arthur in Manchester tonight.

As the night kicked off, Chris took to the stage to perform 'What A Feeling'. Appearing more confident with his performance, the talented singer was praised by, Nicole Scherzinger, Louis Walsh and Tulisa, who told him:

"You've always been yourself, you always do you and I really respect that."

Gary Barlow, who had been mentoring him in the competition, admitted that he was wrong to not put Chris in the final three. Referring to Chris' place in the competition via the wildcard, Gary said amongst the 10,000 strong audience:

"I was wrong. You are back here from the public vote."

With his solo performance over, Chris then returned to the stage with Gary to perform 'Rule The World'.

As the show went on, it was time for Dermot to announce who would be going home. Announcing that Jahmene Douglas had made it through to the final, Dermot then revealed that James Arthur was the second finalist to go through.

Speaking about his elimination from the competition after being comforted by Gary, Christopher told host Dermot O'Leary:

"I feel like I've already won. The critiques I've had and negative press, I'm the third finalist and thanks to everyone that's been supporting."

Chris' exit from the competition came after a two hour spectacular which also saw Jahmene open the show with 'Move On Up' and James Arthur put his own spin on 'I'm Feeling Good'. In between the finalists performing by themselves and with their mentors, Viewers and the audience in Manchester also saw Kylie Minogue, Rita Ora and Kelly Clarkson perform.
