Although it was Christopher Welland's famous Oscar acceptance speech for 'Chariots Of Fire' that included the words "The British are coming!", there's always been a sense that Brits in Hollywood tend to find success either in typically dramatic British films, or playing the villain to all-American heroes.

Not any more, as if the British were coming, 30 years later they have well and truly arrived. Not only are the leads of two of the biggest films of the year, 'The Amazing Spider-Man' and 'The Dark Knight Rises' but so is the latter's director, as well as its villain.

Andrew Garfield may well be the defining 'Spider-Man' while Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan's collaborations on their Batman trilogy have won plaudits and smashed box-office records, culminating in this week's release of 'The Dark Knight Rises' which stars Tom Hardy as the villain, Bane.

Not only are these Kings and Queens taking over Hollywood, but there's also comedic go-to man Russell Brand and Keira Knightly, carving herself out a reputation as a dependable leading lady.

Over past Oscar ceremonies more traditional British films have also been rewarded, with 'The King's Speech' and 'Slumdog Millionaire' both garlanded by the Academy. The former's star Colin Firth received a gong for his performance as King George VI, while Kate Winslet received the award for Best Actress in 2008.

Even elder statesmen like Michael Caine have a spring in their step these days!

So whether it's taking on Hollywood in the biggest blockbusters, or the traditional dramatic fare for which these Isles are usually known, the Brits are truly the moment's Kings and Queens of cinema!
