Tom Cruise To Sue Over Katie Holmes 'Abuse' Rumours

Tom Cruise's legal team have threatened a US tabloid with a lawsuit over front-page claims that he 'abused' and 'punished' ex-wife Katie Holmes.

The media fallout following the couple's split has been gigantic, but the National Enquirer is accused of printing outright lies about the reasons behind he end of their marriage.

In a letter obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Cruise's lawyer Bert Fields launches a tirade against parent company American Media for calling the marital home a "House of Horrors", with Katie and daughter Suri being locked in a "tiny, windowless room".

Calling the report "disgraceful and lurid", Fields claims the story could cause the actor "hundreds of millions of dollars of professional and personal damages".

"We intend to hold American Media, and everyone who participated in the perpetuation of this scurrilous attack, jointly and severely liable," he said.

"Your cover tells the world in huge red and yellow headlines that Mr. Cruise’s home is a “HOUSE OF HORRORS!” Mr. Cruise’s home, which you have pictured, is by no means a “house of horrors.” It is a gracious and loving family home.

"Contrary to your blaring headlines, Mr. Cruise has not engaged in any “abuse” or “humiliation” of Katie Holmes. Nor has he every subjected her to any ‘punishments.’"

He goes on to demand that the Enquirer "immediately retract each and every one of your false assertions about Mr. Cruise with the same prominence and emphasis as you gave your original false and defamatory assertions."
