There were flicks, kicks, spins, cartwheels and more glitter than you can dream of; that means only one thing... The Strictly Come Dancing semi final has arrived!
Strictly Come Dancing has reached the semi final, and with only five celebrities remaining, the competition is tougher than ever. This week the stars had to impress the judges and the audience with two dances, and they really went all out!
Kicking things off were ‘pocket rocket’ Dani Harmer and her partner Vincent. Their first dance was the American smooth and they performed to Michael Buble’s hit song ‘I just haven’t met you yet.’
Looking as pretty as a picture in a sparkly pink dress, Dani glided across the floor with such ease. Head judge Len said that “the more I see you dance, the more I like what I see”, whilst Bruno stated that “you carry on like this and your wish may come true.” All the judges commented on her good heel turns and in the end rewarded the pair a respectable 34 points.
Her second dance, the Argentine Tango, fared much better. Not surprising as she performed with the king of the Argentine Tango, Vincent!
Len commented that she “captured the mood, mastered the technique and stole my heart”, and Craig said that “Vincent has taught you so well.” Darcy had also made the point that the choreography was beautiful, and overall the judges gave Dani and Vincent 38 points.
Olympic gymnast Louis Smith had a mixed response to his two dances. His first, a jive, didn’t go down too well with the judges as they thought that it lacked the sharpness expected of the dance.
While Darcy said that he needed to “really work on being sharp and crisp”, a disgruntled Len moaned that “this didn’t really cut it for me...just too casual.” The judges scored Louis and partner Flavia a disappointing 31 points.
But their disappointment didn’t last too long as they soon turned it around in their second dance. Dancing the Foxtrot, the pair looked smooth and slick and they really improved on their earlier performance.
Craig claimed that “I really did love it”, before adding that it had “fantastic rise and fall.” Darcy added “thank goodness- you’ve got it!” whilst Len commented that it was a much better performance. Their efforts scored the pair 38 points.
After the lows of last week where she ended up in the bottom two, Denise Van Outen was determined to put that behind her and deliver a performance that could take her into the final. And, her two dances really delivered.
Her Tango, danced to The Police’s ‘Roxanne’, really had attack and it was clear that Denise and James were determined to impress- and they succeeded!
Len said that “you came out like the no-stress express... that was a proper tango!” Bruno rambled something about Xena Warrior Princess before exclaiming that it was sensational”. 39 points were rewarded for this dance.
Their Rumba meanwhile was equally well received and they scored 38 points. The routine was simply spellbinding and Len seemed to sum up the mood by saying “the final wouldn’t be the proper final if you’re not there.”
Next up was Girls Aloud star Kimberley Walsh with her partner Pasha, and after gaining the top score last week, they were determined to do the same tonight. They were not disappointed as their American Smooth to the song ‘Fever’ got everyone all fired up and earned them 38 points.
It was their second dance however that really stole the show. Their Charleston gained them a standing ovation from the audience and a brilliant maximum score of 40 points.
Finally, Lisa and Robin rounded off the night with two very different performances. First up was the Salsa which left everyone in stitches after a few wobbles and stumbles by Lisa.
The judges overlooked the technical issues however, as they were just too overwhelmed with laughter. Craig, who had tears of laughter in his eyes could only manage to say “The floor spin did it for me darling!” The hilarious routine scored 31 points.
The second dance, an American smooth, was a little more reserved but equally well received. Bruno said that “when it comes to entertainment, you’re in a league of your own”. Len added that she was “the people’s champion”, which left tears in Lisa’s eyes.
Tonight saw ten fantastic dances as the celebrities battled to earn a place in next week’s grand final. So who’ll be waltzing through to next week and who’ll be going home?
