Royal Rift Over Prince George's Christening? Kate Middleton And Prince William 'Not Inviting Half The Family'

10 October 2013

Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William confirmed earlier this month that son Prince George of Cambridge will be christened on October 23, but according to a new report the happy occasion could run the risk of offending some members of the royal family, with insiders claiming Princess Anne and the Count and Countess of Wessex being left of the guest list.

Little George was born, to much excitement from the public, on July 22 and it was recently confirmed he'd be christened in a service at the Chapel Royal, St James' Palace at the end of this month conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby as revealed in a statement released by Kensington Palace.

However according to the MailOnline in an effort to keep the service "more personal," they'll only be inviting close friends and family, meaning William's aunts and uncles won't be attending. This reportedly includes Princes Andrew and Edward, Edward's wife Sophie of Wessex and Zara Phillips' mum, Princess Anne.

Great-grandparents the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will attend, the report claims, as will Prince Charles and Camilla Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry, who is favourite to be named godparent.

Kate Middleton's immediate family, parents Michael and Carole and brother and sister Pippa and James, are also expected to attend.

The Palace confirmed to EntertainmentWise that unlike the couple's wedding and other royal ceremonies, such as the diamond jubilee celebrations, the occasion will be kept relatively private.

"The christening will be predominantly a private occasion but there will be parts of it where photos and footage are released," they revealed.

Most previous christenings of royals have taken place in the Music Room at Buckingham Palace. But the choice to buck with tradition has no real meaning, according to the Palace, who claim the location was "simply a case of personal preference".

The full statement from the couple read: "Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are pleased to announce the christening of Prince George will take place on Wednesday, 23rd October at The Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace.

"Prince George will be christened by The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby."

The Chapel Royal at St James' Palace has been in regular use since 1702.

It's not the first time Kate and Wills have bucked royal tradition when it comes to their son. According to biographer Katie Nicholl, who recently released Kate: The Future Queen, the couple "surprised" the current Queen when they decided to head to Kate's parents' home in Bucklebury, Berkshire following the arrival of George despite being offered royal residences to get to know their son and the extra security problems the three week stay posed.

"I don't think it upset the Queen. I think it surprised the Queen.

"My sources tell me there was a degree of surprise throughout all the echelons of the palace that - despite being offered Sandringham and Highgrove and all the facilities at Balmoral - the couple chose to move back in to Kate's family home.

"That raised all sort of important matters, such as security, which suddenly was incredibly expensive and had to be navigated for not just George [but also for] Prince William."

She added: "There were all of those matters to consider. I think it was a bit of an obstacle but they managed to get around it and it worked very successfully."
