One's a young royal with years of Army experience under his belt while the other is an actor with years of playing a detective under his - but both Prince Harry and Dominic West are on a course to the South Pole.

And they will be battling it out to be there first as West leads a special Commenwealth team against Harry's British crew in the Walking With The Wounded South Pole Allied Challenge.

The 43-year-old actor has been training "in secret" in Iceland and is now set to take on his fellow former Etonian in the gruelling 208 mile mission to raise money for injured former servicemen and women.

He said: "I agreed to do a walk to the South Pole with these wounded soldiers in December, so I’m trying to train for that at the moment."

A spokesman for Walking With The Wounded added: "He will be joining the Commonwealth team as a celebrity team mentor. He will be taking part in the full trek to the Pole, enduring gruelling conditions of up to minus 50 degrees.

"In fact, he has spent a week in Iceland for secret training on glaciers with his team and only got back on Thursday night."

Harry is just as determined to win the race and hopes to lead his team to glory, especially after he missed out on the chance to conquer Mount Everest with Team UK last year and was forced to pull out of the squad’s mission to the North Pole in 2011 to attend his brother’s William's marriage to Kate Middleton.

After he signed up for the challenge in April, Harry said: "The format may be different. The scale is certainly different. But the aim remains the same – to enable our wounded to do what they and all other servicemen and women do better than anyone else I know – meet a challenge head-on and overcome it and inspire others to do the same.

May the best man win!
