One Direction were swamped by thousands of fans yesterday afternoon as they performed on the Today show in New York City.

The 'Little Things' singers braved the cold and wet weather to perform their hit singles for 15,000 fans at the Rockefeller Plaza in the city, and were certainly given a warm welcome being crowded by their dedicated fans who camped for five days just to buy tickets for the event.

Following their performance, Zayn, Harry, Niall, Louis and Liam made their way through the crowd to greet fans and sign autographs, and thanked fans for staying calm enough to allow them to meet them.

"So nice to go out and say hi see i told u if ur calm we can do whatever and that has really made my dayyyyyyy!!!!" Liam tweeted.

During their appearance on the show, the group confirmed that they will be starring in their first 3D movie which will be released in August, 2013, and follows hot on the heels of Justin Bieber and Katy Perry's similar documentary-style concert flicks.

"We are going to do our first-ever movie and it's going to be in 3-D and it's coming to cinemas near you on the 30th of August, 2013," Niall told the audience.

Documentary film maker Morgan Spurlock is set to direct the concert movie, set for release in August next year. Why does this raise eyebrows among movie fans? Well the director made his name with the documentary Super Size Me, in which Spurlock lived off McDonalds for a month, with predictably unhealthy effects.

One Direction's Youtube channel is sponsored by... you guessed it, McDonald's. While we're pretty sure Directioners will enjoy seeing their idols in their local multiplex, Spurlock's fans are unlikely to be as happy with the director's change of direction.

According to UPI.com, Spurlock said: "This is an incredible opportunity and an amazing moment in time for the band," adding: "To capture this journey and share it with audiences around the world will be an epic undertaking that I am proud to be a part of."
