An Oscar... For Hairdressing?

An Oscar... For Hairdressing?

If you thought haidressers just did their job for the good conversation and satisfaction of turning a shocking barnet into a sleek  masterpiece then you may be in for a shock, as things are very different in Hollywood, where hair stylists are now eligible to win Oscars.

The film academy has changed the rules of the Oscar given for makeup to change the category to the 'makeup and hairstyling award', meaning that stylists who put in huge amounts of work to ensure that the likes of Meryl Streep got Mrs Thatcher's bouffant absolutely perfect are now eligible for Academy Award recognition.

The speeches could be fun, with winners thanking the hairdryer for not blowing up or the work experience kid for sweeping the hair off the floor, but to be serious, some of Hollywood's most iconic moments have been hair related, from Marylin Monroe's famous blonde locks to Gandalf's massive white beard.

The Academy modifies the rules for the Oscars each year, though most changes are in technical specifications for each award.

Good luck to all the hairdressers out there!
