Lady Gaga has said that she was not exactly surprised about the death of Whitney Houston earlier this year, but was no less devastated by the news.

Speaking to Oprah Winfrey during a special and exclusive interview, Gaga said that Whitney was a huge influence on her music and that she even imagined her singing 'Born This Way' when she first wrote it as she needed to imagine a 'superstar' performing the song.

Chatting to Oprah from the New York home she grew up in, Gaga said: “I used to stand at the top of that staircase and sing ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ every single day after school. I would play it over and over. I used to stand up there and I would study her. I thanked her at the Grammys when I won that award because she for me is the greatest of all time.”

Asked how she felt when the news of Whitney's death first broke, Gaga revealed: “I don’t know that I was like really surprised, I think it was just more I couldn’t believe that her heart wasn’t beating any more. That’s really sort of the feeling that I felt. I was grateful that I knew that she knew I loved her.”

Meanwhile, speaking in the same interview, Gaga's Mother said that she believes her daughter 'has a screw loose'.
