Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge could name her first child with Prince William Frances if it is a girl - because it was the middle name of his late mother, Diana.

The Princess of Wales was tragically killed in a car crash in Paris in August 1997, and former royal commentator for the BBC Jennie Bond thinks that she may be honoured in the baby's name.

Speaking to the Express, she said that Diana once told her how proud she was of her firstborn son - and that she knew the country would be proud of him too.

"Diana was always very proud of William," she said. "She told me once that the country was very lucky to have him, and I think she's been proved right.

"I would be surprised if there wasn't a tribute to her in the name if it is a girl."

She went on: "There was only one Diana, and that may be too full of meaning and tragedy. But she was Diana Frances and I can see the name Frances being in there somewhere."

Jennie also praised Kate for handling press attention "very well".

She gushed: "Every time their privacy gets invaded, I just feel so sorry for them.

"I think Kate handles it very well, but do we have to have these prying photos? It is so difficult. There is no point in having a monarchy unless they are visible and yet there must be some leeway to allow them privacy."

Kate's baby is thought to be due in early July.
