Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has sent fans into panic after he was rushed to hospital over the weekend, forcing the band to cancel their planned show in Bologna, Italy.

The band, who are currently in the middle of their European tour, confirmed the news last night that the show would not go ahead.

Armstrong's fellow band members, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool, appeared in a video message in which they did not reveal the nature of Armstrong's illness, but said they were "beyond devastated" and would make up the concert next summer.

The news comes after the band's praised surprise show at this year's Reading festival.

Although the surprise element was somewhat lacking since the band announced their plans earlier in the week, the US group did manage to add a bit of frenzy to proceedings.

They had been rumoured to be taking to the NME/Radio 1 stage at 12pm but in fact turned up at 11am after frontman Billie Joe Armstrong took to Twitter to confirm their performance, writing: "Green day - READING FESTIVAL CONFIRMED!! On stage in 45 minutes! In the NME / RADIO 1 tent. 11am!! Be there!"

Fans were soon rushing to get to the stage, forcing organisers to seal off access, according to NME.com. The band's set was also shown on a big screen on the Main Stage to accomodate the huge demand.

There were rumours that the band would be previewing new tracks from forthcoming album trilogy '¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, ¡Tré!', but instead Armstrong and co played a setlist of fan favourites including  'Letterbomb', 'Hitchin' A Ride' and 'St Jimmy'.
