Fifth Harmony group member Ally Brooke said performing on The X Factor USA stage after learning her grandfather had died was “the hardest thing” she has had to do.

The member of Simon Cowell's girl group on talent show gave it her all on Wednesday night despite grieving over her relative.

The 19-year-old said after the show: "This is been the hardest thing that I have ever gone through."

Ally and her band members Dinah Jane Hansen, Lauren Jauregui, Normani Hamilton and Camila Cabello – sang Kelly Clarkson's Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You), and she noted that her grandfather wanted her to fight on in the competition.

She revealed: "I was blessed enough to talk to my grandfather the night before he passed and he told me that everything was going to be okay and I know he wanted me continue and do my best, be happy, and that's what keeps me going.

"God has helped me a lot in getting through this very painful time. I'm just grateful for the amazing support that I have here. My girls have been amazing. I was about to completely lose it right before we performed ... but they were there to comfort me."

Ally’s tough time also had an effect on the other ladies on Fifth Harmony.

Camila, 15, said: "It was difficult for all of us because when she hurts we hurt. It was really tough, so the fact that the song had more meaning gave it a new dimension."

Thankfully the judges appreciated that they were going through a terrible time and as a result it made their performance even better.

Britney Spears said: "The song really worked for a group. You can tell you worked hard." Demi Lovato added that the song was "one of the best performances you guys have given."
