The third season of Downton Abbey proved to be a hit with the viewers so we're sure fans of the hit ITV1 period drama will be pleased to know that the show could return to our screens for another series.

Speaking about the future of the drama, which saw Hollywood icon Shirley MacLaine arrive as Lady Grantham's American and outspoken mother and the tragic demise of Lady Sybil during childbirth, in series three, the Hollywood Reporter quoted creator Julian Fellowes saying:

"We are being very sort of coy about it. We don't know. We haven't had a commission. But I think it would be pretty odd if there wasn't."

We have to agree!

Divulging a little bit more information, executive producer Gareth Neame teased: "We hope to have some news in a few days."

Whilst talks of a fourth series are rife, one character that may not be returning to the show is Dan Stevens who plays Matthew Crawley.

According to the Mail Online, Dan, who is starring on Broadway in the US, said recently:

"New York for me is going to be one big adventure. I will be taking the whole family out and we will be there for six months.‘I don’t know if I will be returning to Downton."

We can't wait for a fourth series, can you?
