Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan Thinks Simon Cowell 'Should Be Shot'

Musician Dave Gahan has said that he thinks Simon Cowell should be "shot," and that TV talent shows are making it difficult for new artists to break into the music industry.

Speaking to Music Week, the Depeche Mode frontman said that he disagrees with TV talent shows like Cowell’s The X Factor.

“I’m not advocating violence but I think somebody should shoot Simon Cowell,” said Gahan.

“It’s a pretty horrible business today really, I’ve got to say,” the singer said about how difficult it is for new musicians to break into the music industry now. “You have to be tough and you’ve got to be thick skinned because there are going to be things written about you that you’re not going to like.”

“You’re going to get scrutinised,” Gahan continued. “Your work will not always be liked and if they do like something really a lot they’re probably not going to like the next thing and compare it to the last thing.”

“It takes time for a band to grow if they’re any good,” he added.

Depeche Mode formed in Essex back in the 1980s, so Gahan admitted that the band didn’t have to suffer the same kind of press attention that current bands do.

“We were lucky that we were taken under the wing of [producer] Daniel Miller who never once in the studio said, ‘Where’s the hit song?’.”

Depeche Mode recently announced plans for a European tour, which will see the band travel to London in May to play two gigs at the O2 Arena. Gahan says that the band has been working on a new album, which is set to be released next year.
