Celebrity birthdays: 5 things you didn’t know about Miley Cyrus

Celebrate the controversial singer’s 21st birthday with little-known Miley Cyrus facts!

Pop star of the moment Miley Cyrus turns 21 today. The headline-hitting singer is making the news pages all the time, so let's go back to her beginnings and discover a few lesser-known titbits about the former Hannah Montana, from her famous godmother to her childhood obsessions.

1. Miley's original name was not her 'destiny' in the end

Miley's parents, country singer Billy Ray Cyrus and Leticia, named their daughter Destiny Hope.

Their baby, however, was such a grinning little poppet they called her "Smiley". This got shortened to Miley, and the new moniker stuck, although her grandma continued to call her Destiny.

In 2008, she legally changed her name to Miley Ray Cyrus.

2. Miley has a famous godmother

As she has a famous dad, it follows suit that Miley's godmother is from the world of showbiz. It's none other than Dolly Parton, who even dropped by 'Hannah Montana' to star as Aunt Dolly. Amazing.

Dolly is complimentary about her goddaughter, comparing her to Elvis in an interview in 2008, and calling Miley a "fantastic singer and songwriter" who is "really deep".

3. Miley has a heart condition

Miley revealed in her autobiography 'Miles to Go' that she has tachycardia, a heart condition that means her resting heart rate is faster than normal.

She reassured fans that the type of tachycardia she has "isn't dangerous" but, although it "won't hurt" her it does "bother" her. She says she's always thinking about her heart when she's on stage.

4. Miley is actually left-handed

Miley opens her autobiography with the revelation that she thinks a lot about her hands. Why so? I hear you cry. Well, because she was naturally left-handed, but her dad made her switch to use her right.

Billy Ray was also left-handed, and told his daughter stories about how it was hard for him to find a left-handed guitar, and how lefties had to "learn the world backwards".

So papa dearest made Miley write right-handed, although she's still left-handed for everything else. Like what? Holding a fork, opening doors, brushing her hair, carrying her horses' reins.

As the singer quips, if you don't like her handwriting, "talk to my dad".

5. Miley's obsessions

This fascination with her hands led to Miley's interest in calligraphy. It was a short-lived pastime, which is a shame as 'Miley: My Adventures in Calligraphy' would surely have topped the bestseller chart.

She was too busy with other fads, and lists seven hobbies she "obsessed over for 5 seconds", including: beading; knitting (this one only last for two seconds); scrapbooking; reading Einstein's life story; marine biology; and high fashion.

So that surely means she'll move on from twerking soon then.
