Rihanna EXCLUSIVE: ‘She isn’t a great role model for women,’ says Will Young

Rihanna is part of an elite group of celebrities who has a fan base covering both sexes. But fellow singer, Will Young believes she's doing more harm than good for her female following.

In an exclusive chat with omg!, the former Pop Idol winner expressed his concern for women who love Rihanna.

He said: "I don't think Rihanna is a massively great role model for women, her lyrics aren't empowering.

"She's a brilliant pop star and recording artist but her lyrics are not empowering - young girls have to listen to those lyrics."

Will drew reference to Rihanna's latest album, 'Talk That Talk', featuring the track 'Cockiness (Love It)' that includes the lyrics: 'I want you to be my sex slave, Anything I desire, Be one with my femin-ay, Set my whole body on fire.'

But it wasn't just words that jolted Will into having such an aversion to Rihanna, her highly sexualized image upsets him too.

He added: "I saw Rihanna kissing a girl in one of her videos [S&M] and I thought who is this for? If you're going to do it just go the whole way like Madonna did and have sex on a bed.

"Women in a patriarchal society should be empowering and owning their bodies, I don't think Rihanna is. I feel quite strongly about this.

"I'm more interested in female in pop stars that are empowering for women as a feminist myself."

So if Rihanna doesn't cut it as a feminist icon, which female musicians do?

"You can sexualize yourself in an empowering way," Will said. "Adele doesn't sexualize herself yet she's very open about her heartache.

"Image wise Lady Gaga is empowering. I'm more interested in women like Annie Lennox of Grace Jones, people who have challenged the female form who have owned it and brought it forward."

omg! spoke to Will on the eve of International Women's Day so it seemed only apt we asked him who women should be looking up to.

He told us: "On International Women's Day we need to look at artists who really took on female empowerment, the people who take on the female form and completely changed it, I'm more interested in those women."

Despite his beliefs, Will Young is a big Rihanna fan /WENN

But it's not just 90s songstresses who should be admired, M.I.A also takes pride of place on Will's approved list.

"M.I.A's Bad Girl video is one of my favourite ever videos. I've never seen anything like it — it's so epic, strong and cool and funny and empowering!"

So what would Will make of a M.I.A and Rihanna duet? We'll just have to ask him next time…
