The 37-year-old former Spice Girl is said to have impressed Simon following her guest stint on the UK X Factor judging panel last year.

She may have impressed Simon but she pretty much scared the living daylights out of everyone else.

They don’t call her Scary for nothing.

A source told The Sun: “Mel has proved to Cowell that she is a great reality show judge on his Australian and British shows.

“Now he has rewarded her with this plum American gig which did wonders for Piers and kept Sharon in the headlines.

“Mel loves the US and can’t wait to get her teeth into the role.”

Top dog of America’s Got Talent Paul Telegdy praised the signing of Mel, describing her as ‘very frank, strong, enduring entertainer’.

He went on to say: “She’s an amazing singer, dancer and a huge personality. The contestants will get a lot of constructive feedback from her.”

Sharon Osbourne quit the show after having a fall out with producers behind the scenes.

So with Sharon now looking for a job and, if reports are to be believed, Tulisa being axed from the X Factor- could Mrs O be making a dramatic return to the UK series?

Only time will tell.
