It was always going to be a sad moment in the evening but we would have never guessed it would cause so much controversy.

Jane Lynch paid tribute to Glee star Cory Monteith at last night’s Emmys saying that Glee has suffered a ‘death in the family’.

"This summer on our show Glee we suffered a painful death in our family," Jane said.

"From the first time you saw Cory, he had a star quality and genuine sweetness that made it impossible not to fall in love with him."

The actress also praised the 31-year-old who passed away in July - for being a "gifted and wonderful young man" although admitted he is “not perfect”.

"Cory was a beautiful soul. He was not perfect, which many of us here tonight can relate to. His death is a tragic reminder of the rapacious, senseless destruction that is brought on by addiction," she said.

"Tonight we remember Cory for all he was and mourn the loss of all he could have been. To a generation that loved Cory so, please know this gifted and wonderful young man was worthy of your love.”

However, actor Jack Klugman’s son criticised the tribute because his father, who also died this year aged 90, was left out of proceedings while Cory was honoured.

"My dad was at the inception of television and helped build it in the early days,” he said.

Jack Klugman was best known for his roles in the 1970s comedy The Odd Couple and Quincy but for some reason was snubbed by last night’s ceremony.

"It's an insult and it really seems typical of this youth-centric culture that has an extremely short attention span and panders to only a very narrow demographic," his son said.

He added: "What about the people who should be introduced to somebody like my father? I don't mean to say anything disparaging about Cory, but he was a kid who had won no Emmys and it was a self-induced tragedy."

Cory Monteith died last month of an overdose, officially referred to as mixed drug toxicity, with heroin and alcohol being among the substances found in his body. He was just 31 years old.
