The 22-year-old reality star is one of the show's most popular characters, something that Joey wanted to capitalise on.
A source told The Sun: “Joey is one of the biggest stars on TOWIE and with that comes a lot of pressure, which he sometimes finds hard to take.”
However, when Joey approached producers about improving his deal with the show, poor Joey was shut down.
The source continued: “His people asked bosses for an enhanced deal in order for him to stay, but producers held firm.”
Rather than quit the programme (because let's face it what else would he do?) Joey decided to stay on after his fiancé Sam Faiers convinced him to continue.
The source added: “Sam told him she really wanted him to stay on the show, and he has now agreed to return.”
The latest series of TOWIE has struggled to match the success of previous seasons of the ITV2 flag ship show, while rival staged reality programme Made in Chelsea continues to grow in its ratings.
Series nine of TOWIE will return to our screens on June 2, starting with a very special Marbella edition of the show.
Clearly Joey has moved on from his diva demands, excitedly tweeting yesterday: “On way to MARBELLA Marbella MARBELLA !!”
